This week we started frisbee golf with the grade 2-4 students here at MTS.  Last week we focused on proper throwing and catching technique, and this week students put their throwing skills to the test while playing our nine hole frisbee golf course in the field.  We talk a little about some golf terms like par, birdie, eagle, and bogey.   Students are also demonstrating proper golf etiquette by letting the person furthest from the hole play first.  Frisbee golf, or disc golf as its more commonly called, is a popular game in and around Calgary.  There are a number of free courses where you can just walk right on and play.   Thank you to the grade 4 students who have been helping me set up the frisbee golf baskets in the morning.  I REALLY appreciate their help.  Also, a big shout out to everyone who is walking or riding to school each Thursday! It's great to see students getting to school in an active way.  There are only 4 Thu...
Although the weather was variable this week, we still got outside to enjoy some phys ed.  Between rain showers students participated in a number of activities including lacrosse, frisbee, double dutch skipping, soccer and tag.  It was a great week. It has been great to see all the students walking or riding to school the past two Thursdays.  Let's keep it up for the last 5 Thursdays of the year!
This past week was our last week of swimming.  I was really proud of all the grade 3 and 4 students for stepping outside of their comfort zones at the pool.  Many students experienced "firsts" throughout the week, like diving from the starter blocks, putting their head under water, and swimming without a PFD.  Thank you to all staff and students for being flexible and making swimming work.  Also thanks to School Council for paying for the bus and subsidizing the cost of swimming.   Students in K-2 continued learning soccer skills.  We worked on our side kick throughout the week.  Ask your son or daughter about their favourite soccer game/activity this week. Starting next week, every Thursday is going to be a Walk or Ride Day.  Each Thursday everyone at MTS is encouraged to get to school in an active way.  This could include walking, biking, scootering, skateboarding, anything to get to school in an active way!  Students can store th...
Swimming for the grade 3 and 4 students started this week.  So far things are going really well.  The students have been independent in the change rooms, listening to their instructors, and trying their best in the pool.  Thank you to everyone in the school (both staff and students) for being flexible during these two weeks of swimming.  Schedules and routines get rearranged for these two weeks, so EVERYONE in the building is part of keeping swimming successful.   The K-2 students are not swimming in PE.  They are learning soccer skills instead.  I am hoping to get them outside using their skills soon, but the weather is definitely not cooperating! This week we worked on trapping and dribbling, and capped the week off with an exciting game of four corner soccer in the gymnasium.
