We finished our throwing unit this week at MTS.  Students did a great job of starting with the ball near their ears, standing sideways, and stepping and throwing in one smooth motion.  I saw tons of progress over the last 3 weeks.   We will continue to build on these skills throughout the year to develop students' physical literacy so that they can confidently play and be active.
This week we continued to focus on throwing and catching.  I have seen some huge improvements, especially in grades 1 and 2, in students' ability to throw and catch.  Students have been really working on stepping forward, with their opposite foot, as they throw to add power/force.   We started outside this week playing a passing game called Birds in the Nest, then played a game called Hoop Flip inside on Wednesday, and finished the week playing Pass over the Net.  Ask your son or daughter to show you wha they learned about throwing this week.

We were outside all week again this week due to the Alien Inline residency in the gymnasium, but luckily the weather cooperated, although the mornings can still be quite cool.  Thank you to everyone for wearing appropriate fall clothing these past two weeks.  We will likely still be going outside for a lesson or two next week, so continue to bring jackets, toques and mitts.  Thank you! Students started working on throwing and catching skills this week.  We really focused on stepping with our opposite foot as we threw the ball to add power to our throws.  I saw a lot of improvement over the week.   Halfway through the week we took a break from throwing and catching and took part in a community walk/clean-up.  Students used little pinchers to pick up the pieces of garbage, so no hands should have been handling garbage at all.  We collected two big garbage bags worth of garbage!  Good work taking care of the community, MTS!

We had a great week enjoying PE outside.  Students in grades 2-4 learned how to play the classic recess game, 4-square, and students in grade 1 learned how to play hopscotch.  Hopefully this will give students another activity to try while out for recess.  I saw many students rushing to the 4-square grids at lunchtime, so I think it worked. Students in grade 3 and 4 also participated in our Alien Inline Skating residency this week.  I love watching all the kids try their best during skating.  Inline skating is not easy, but the students are still giving it their all!
