We started a unique unit this week I call "combatives," where students compete in a variety of wrestling warm-up drills and activities.  We started with a discussion about what "combat" sports are: they involve getting points by landing strikes, a knockdown, or pinning someone.  These include Karate, Tae-kwon-do, sumo wrestling, boxing, fencing, etc. Many students shared that they already practice some sort of "combat" sport outside of school.  We then talked about how students need to ensure that they are doing these activities safely, and to demonstrate good sportsmanship at the end of each match by shaking hands and saying "good game."

Some of the different combatives we tried were thumb wrestling, arm wrestling, the front support knockdown, and the single leg pull.  It was lots of fun watching students compete safely, and I was especially proud of everyone's sportsmanship.  Make sure to ask your child/children about their favourite combative.
