Hello families!

We’re now into Week 2 of our basketball unit, and the energy in the gym continues to be amazing! After spending last week building strong dribbling fundamentals, we expanded our focus this week to include passing and shooting, while continuing to reinforce dribbling through warm-ups and games.

This week, students were introduced to the bounce pass, a key passing technique in basketball. We practiced starting with the ball at our chest, keeping our elbows out, and using a single bounce to get the ball to a partner. It was great to see students concentrating on proper form and teamwork. For shooting, we worked on a two-hand basketball shot, encouraging students to aim carefully and use their legs to help generate power.

On Wednesday, we set up skill stations to reinforce all of these abilities. Students rotated through three activities:

  • Dribbling stations to practice control and movement

  • Bounce passing stations to build accuracy with a partner

  • Shooting stations where students had the chance to aim and improve their form with the two-hand shot

These stations gave students the chance to practice at their own pace, get lots of touches on the ball, and encourage one another.

On Thursday and Friday, we wrapped up the week with a fun and fast-paced game called “3 Pass.” In this game students focused on how move to get open, communicate with teammates, and watch out for defenders trying to steal the ball! Our Grade 3 and 4 students also learned about man-to-man defence, focusing on staying with their assigned player and using footwork to defend without fouling.

It’s been awesome watching students build their confidence and basketball IQ with each class. We’re looking forward to even more skill-building (and fun!) in the week ahead.

Next week, all PE classes will be held outside as our gymnasium is getting a fresh coat of paint. Please ensure your child comes to school dressed appropriately for the weather, including proper footwear for outdoor activity. We'll continue with fun, active lessons—rain or shine! Thank you for your support and flexibility.

Thanks for your continued support,
Marc van Sluys
PE Teacher
