Lacrosse

This week we continued building our lacrosse skills with a focus on passing and teamwork . Students learned and practiced proper passing technique through two engaging activities: Hoop Flip and Pass for Treasure . In Hoop Flip , partners worked together to complete a passing challenge. Each successful pass allowed them to flip their hoop farther away, making each round a little trickier and helping students work on accuracy and control. In Pass for Treasure , students passed to a partner who was standing on “treasure.” If the partner caught the ball, they earned a piece of treasure for their team. This activity encouraged soft hands, and good aim. Later in the week, students put all their skills to use in 3-on-3 lacrosse games . It was great to see them applying proper grip, scooping, catching, cradling, and passing in a real game setting. Looking forward to more lacrosse fun next week!  - Mr. van Sluys
This week in PE, we continued building on our lacrosse skills with all K–4 classes. After learning the basics last week, students were ready to try some exciting new techniques like  cradling and shooting . We introduced cradling, which helps players keep control of the ball while moving. To practice this skill, students played a favourite game called British Bulldog , where they had to cradle the ball while moving safely across the gym without losing control. It was a fun way to build confidence and coordination. Students also worked on shooting by playing Shoot for Treasure . A variety of targets were set up around the gym, and students aimed, shot, and tried to win treasure by hitting the targets. This helped them practice accuracy, power, and proper shooting form. It was a fantastic week of progress, and students are really starting to feel more comfortable with their lacrosse sticks and skills. We’re looking forward to introducing passing and maybe some small-sided games n...
This week in PE, we kicked off our lacrosse unit with all K–4 classes! Even though it was a short week, we packed in lots of learning and introduced students to the fundamentals of this exciting sport. Our main focus was on three key skills: grip, scooping, and catching.  Students learned how to hold the lacrosse stick correctly, keeping their hands spaced and positioned for control and safety.  Then we practiced scooping ground balls using low knees, two hands on the stick, and a smooth upward motion.   Afterwards, students tried catching tennis balls and worked on a few tricks.   The students showed awesome effort and picked up the basics quickly. It was great to see so many trying something new with confidence and enthusiasm! Next week, we’ll build on these skills with cradling, passing, and simple game play. Feel free to ask your child to demonstrate how to scoop—they love showing off their skills!
It’s been great to see all the students back in the gym and excited to move again! For the first few days, we spent time reviewing our PE rules and expectations so that everyone could get back into good routines and safe habits. Today, to celebrate the Halloween spirit, we played Zombie Tag.    It is  a fun and energetic game that got everyone running, laughing, and showing off their best zombie moves! It was the perfect way to end our first week back and get pumped up for Halloween. I’m looking forward to another great stretch of learning, teamwork, and fun in PE! - Mr. van Sluys
This short week, PE classes continued working on overhand throws while enjoying the outdoors. Students in Grades 1 and 2 practiced with soft foam balls, focusing on proper technique, accuracy, and building confidence. Grades 3 and 4 challenged themselves with footballs, learning how to step, aim, and throw with power and control.  We played a variation of Leapfrog Touchdowns, and students also learned the classic recess game, Jackpot! Because our Grade 3, 4 and EES students began their Alien Inline residency this week in the gymnasium, regular gym classes took place outside. It was a great chance to get fresh air, stay active, and keep developing throwing skills. Have a great weekend! - Mr. van Sluys

Hello families! This week in PE, we took advantage of the beautiful fall weather and held our classes outside! It was a great week full of fun, movement, and skill-building. Skill Focus: Overhand Throwing All K–4 students worked on developing their overhand throwing skills. We broke the skill down into easy-to-remember steps: Stand sideways to your target. Ball by your ear, elbow up – like you're getting ready to launch! Step forward and throw with control and power. Students practiced throwing with partners using soft balls and focused on improving both accuracy and technique. Grades 3 & 4: Football Fun! Our Grade 3 and 4 students took their overhand throwing skills to the next level by practicing with footballs. We worked on proper grip and throwing technique, then had fun applying what we learned in a game called Leapfrog Touchdowns – a favourite among students that combines teamwork, movement, and plenty of laughter! 3 Left Feet Dance Residency – A H...

PE Outside This Week

PE Outside This Week This week in PE, we’ve been enjoying the fresh air outside while the Three Left Feet dance company runs a two-week residency for our K–2 students in the gym. With our classes moving outdoors, it was the perfect opportunity to revisit some classic recess games. Students had fun learning and practicing games like hopscotch and 4 square, which not only build coordination and agility but also help promote teamwork and friendly competition. It’s been great to see students smiling, staying active, and adding new options to their recess playtime! A reminder that mornings can still be quite cool, so please ensure students come dressed appropriately for the weather so they can stay comfortable while being active outside.
