This week in PE, we wrapped up our work with jumping rope and introduced a unit on gymnastics. The students have been working hard on their coordination, endurance, and rhythm while jumping rope, and it's been great to see their confidence grow! Next week, we will dive deeper into our gymnastics unit. Students will be practicing skills that focus on balance, strength, flexibility, and body control. Safety will be our top priority, and we will ensure that all students feel comfortable and supported as they explore these new movements. Encouraging your child to practice balance and flexibility at home—like simple stretches or balancing on one foot—can help reinforce what we're learning in class. Thank you for your support, and I look forward to another exciting week in PE! Marc van Sluys - PE Teacher
Did you know that February is also known as Heart Month. So our focus in Physical Education has taken a "jump" towards cardiovascular health. This week, we have introduced jumping rope to our students, aiming not only to keep their bodies active but also to educate them on the importance of maintaining a healthy heart. During our sessions, we've had meaningful discussions about what it means to nurture our hearts. From the foods we eat to the exercises we do, every little step counts towards ensuring our cardiovascular system stays strong and efficient. Jumping rope, in particular, has proven to be an excellent tool for achieving these goals. Jumping rope isn't just about skipping over a cord; it's about developing coordination and agility. This simple activity engages multiple muscle groups simultaneously, helping children improve their balance and timing. Coordination, a skill crucial in both sports and everyday activities, is honed through the rhythmic motions ...
Over the past few weeks, MTS students have been hard at work learning the fundamentals of floor hockey! Last week we continued to focus on the key skills of stickhandling and passing, helping them develop control, accuracy, and confidence with their hockey sticks. Through fun drills and partner activities, they improved their ability to maneuver and pass the ball. This past week, we put those skills to the test in real floor hockey games! It was amazing to see the students apply what they had learned, working together to pass, defend, and score goals. Beyond the physical skills, they also practiced teamwork, communication, and sportsmanship—essential lessons that go beyond the game. I’m so proud of their progress and enthusiasm! Ask your child about their experience and favourite moments from our floor hockey unit!
This week we started a floor hockey unit in PE.  I started by reviewing how to grip the hockey stick, and then we played some different stick-handling games and activities.  We will progress to shooting and passing skills, and then by next week we will play some actual floor hockey games.
